Colourful, mysterious and completely unique: alebrijes are among Mexico’s most enchanting art forms.
The story begins in the 1930s with Mexican artist Pedro Linares, who, during a serious illness, dreamed of strange fantastical animals—creatures made from parts of different animals and covered in vivid colours. In his dream, he heard them shouting the word “Alebrijes!” When he recovered, he began bringing these creatures to life using cartonería, a traditional Mexican technique with paper, cardboard and paste.
The tradition later found a special home in Oaxaca, where artisans began carving alebrijes from copal wood. Each piece is carefully shaped, sanded and painted by hand, often with incredibly detailed patterns and colours. No two are exactly alike.
Today, alebrijes are much more than colourful decorations. They represent Mexican creativity, craftsmanship, imagination and cultural heritage, and have become recognised around the world.
At Ek Chuah, we are delighted to share these extraordinary creatures with you.
Every alebrije has a personality.
Perhaps one is waiting to become part of your story.
